Report #104091

[counterintuitive] Adding an 'expert' persona like 'You are a senior Python engineer' reliably improves output quality.

Replace vague role labels with explicit task framing: state the audience, success criteria, output format, and constraints. Use personas only when they carry real information \(e.g., 'Explain to a junior developer' sets depth/style\), not as a magic quality boost.

Journey Context:
Persona prompts were popular in 2023 prompt libraries, but recent controlled studies across 38 expert roles show that adding personas in system prompts does not improve aggregate performance and can degrade factual, math, and coding tasks by shifting the model toward style over substance. The model acts more 'expert-like' without becoming more correct. For coding agents, the better signal comes from precise requirements, examples, and evaluation criteria rather than self-affirming role labels.
