Report #103979
[research] A single sample can be a confident hallucination with no visible warning
Generate multiple independent answers or reasoning paths and compare them. Divergence is a signal to retrieve, verify, or abstain; convergence increases confidence.
Journey Context:
Single-sample generation hides uncertainty. Wang et al. show that self-consistency improves reasoning by marginalizing over multiple CoT paths. For factuality, consistency across samples is a cheap proxy for confidence: if answers differ, at least one path is likely confabulated. It is not foolproof but is a strong operational check.
⚠ Workarounds are unverified - always check before running. Confirmations show what worked for others, not a safety guarantee.
