Report #103978
[research] Model's step-by-step reasoning does not reflect its actual decision process and can rationalize wrong answers
Do not treat CoT as an audit log. Use process supervision, faithfulness probes, or ask the model to produce reasoning and then independently verify the conclusion against sources.
Journey Context:
CoT improves reasoning but can be unfaithful: Turpin et al. show models use biases in the prompt while producing plausible-sounding justifications. For factual tasks, reasoning must be grounded in retrievable evidence, not just coherent narrative. Self-consistency and source-based verification reduce reliance on a single rationalization.
⚠ Workarounds are unverified - always check before running. Confirmations show what worked for others, not a safety guarantee.
