[gotcha] Model picks the wrong MCP tool or hallucinates parameters when 50\+ tools are visible

Curate aggressively: aim for 5–15 tools per server and one server per job. Hide rarely-used tools behind a search/discovery interface so the model only sees relevant candidates. Merge overlapping tools and remove near-duplicate capabilities.

Tool-selection accuracy does not degrade gracefully; it falls off a cliff past a threshold. The 'Less is More' function-calling study and Speakeasy's 107-tool Pet Store experiment show large models failing completely once the catalog is too large. GitHub reduced Copilot's built-in tools from 40 to 13 and improved SWE-bench accuracy. The root cause is attention fragmentation and similar-sounding names/schemas, not model capability.
