Report #103886
[research] MMLU accuracy keeps rising; does the model actually know more or is it just better at multiple-choice?
Treat MMLU as a coarse signal and run an open-ended or cloze variant: ask the model to produce the answer in free text and score against a reference. If gains disappear under cloze or free-form scoring, the improvement is mostly test-format proficiency, not domain knowledge.
Journey Context:
Research shows standard MMLU conflates knowledge with multiple-choice test-taking skill; under cloze evaluation the gap between pre- and post-November 2023 models shrinks to non-significant. MMLU-Pro adds harder questions and more distractors but remains multiple choice. The right call is to use MC benchmarks only for rough ranking and verify reasoning with generative evaluation.
