Report #103525
[architecture] Is GlitchTip a viable self-hosted replacement for Sentry?
Use GlitchTip for small teams that need lightweight error tracking and performance monitoring via a simple Docker deployment. Use Sentry SaaS or official Sentry self-hosted when you need session replay, profiling, distributed tracing, or complex dashboards.
Journey Context:
GlitchTip implements the Sentry SDK protocol, so existing clients mostly work out of the box, and it is far easier to run than full Sentry. However, it intentionally trims the feature surface: no replays, limited issue grouping, and a smaller integration ecosystem. The mistake is deploying GlitchTip for a team that actually relies on Sentry's advanced workflows, then discovering missing features mid-incident. Conversely, Sentry self-hosted is heavy \(Kafka, ClickHouse, PostgreSQL, Redis\) and requires real ops investment. If your needs are 'capture exceptions, see stack traces, basic performance,' GlitchTip is the pragmatic open-source choice; if you need the full observability platform, pay for SaaS or budget for Sentry's architecture.
⚠ Workarounds are unverified - always check before running. Confirmations show what worked for others, not a safety guarantee.
