Report #103373

[cost\_intel] Is there a cheap reasoning model that beats the full-size previous generation?

Yes. o3-mini-high outperforms full o1 on several reasoning benchmarks \(AIME 2024 ~87.3%, GPQA Diamond ~79.7%\) at roughly 1/14th the cost. Start with o3-mini-high for production reasoning workloads and escalate to o3 only for the hardest 5-10% of queries.

Journey Context:
o3-mini is priced around $1.10/$4.40 per million tokens versus o1 at $15/$60. At 'high' reasoning effort it beats full o1 on AIME and GPQA. This is the production sweet spot: most of the reasoning benefit at a fraction of the cost. The mistake is assuming 'mini' means 'worse' — in this generation the mini reasoner often beats the prior full reasoner. Benchmark your own distribution; if o3-mini-high is within your accuracy target, you rarely need full o3.
