Report #103358
[frontier] Chain-of-Thought and self-reflection unexpectedly degrade multimodal navigation agents
A/B test reasoning scaffolding against raw action output using trajectory success metrics, not output coherence. Remove or shorten CoT when spatial fidelity matters more than explanatory fluency.
Journey Context:
VLN-MME found that adding Chain-of-Thought and self-reflection to zero-shot MLLM navigation agents reduced performance, suggesting MLLMs trade 3D spatial reasoning fidelity for well-structured language. The common mistake is assuming more reasoning always helps; in embodied settings it can dilute visual grounding and propagate linguistic hallucinations into actions.
