[counterintuitive] Long 'act as an expert X' role prompts improve output quality

Keep system prompts short and focused on the task, format, and guardrails. If expertise matters, state the domain once \('You are a senior SRE reviewing Terraform'\) and spend the saved tokens on constraints, output schema, and evaluation criteria.

Journey Context:
The 2023 consensus was that elaborate persona prompts \('You are a world-class physicist with 20 years of experience...'\) aligned the model with expert-like distributions. Controlled studies and production experience now show that florid persona text mostly adds noise and can increase sycophancy or overconfidence. Anthropic\\'s own system prompt is famously terse. The replacement is a concise identity statement plus a detailed task description: the model benefits more from knowing what 'good' looks like \(rubric, schema, examples\) than from theatrical biographical detail.
