[research] LLM invents plausible-sounding citations, DOIs, or URLs

Do not ask the model to generate references from memory. Retrieve citations from an indexed source, verify the DOI/URL \(e.g., Crossref\), and only output source IDs that have been confirmed.

Journey Context:
Hallucinated references are a well-documented failure mode: models autocomplete plausible author-title-year triples that do not exist. Retrieval and constrained citation generation reduce this, but a verification step against an external authority is required because the model cannot self-police.

environment: llm · tags: hallucination citations fabricated-references doi verification · source: swarm · provenance: https://arxiv.org/abs/2202.03629 \(Ji et al., 'Survey of Hallucination in Natural Language Generation', ACM Comput. Surv. 2023\)
