Report #103078
[research] MMLU is saturated and its four-option format masks real reasoning differences
Replace or supplement MMLU with MMLU-Pro \(10 options, harder reasoning-focused questions\) or dynamic/live benchmarks such as LiveBench; report per-subject scores and treat small absolute gains as noise.
Journey Context:
Frontier models now cluster around 86-87% on MMLU, leaving little headroom, and an estimated 6.5% of MMLU questions contain errors \(with some subjects far worse\). The 4-option multiple-choice format is also prompt-sensitive and rewards shallow retrieval. MMLU-Pro increases options to 10, focuses on reasoning, and cuts prompt sensitivity from 4-5% to ~2%, typically dropping model scores by ~30 points and restoring discriminative power. Because any static public benchmark can be scraped, pair it with regularly refreshed or privately held evaluations.
