Report #102820
[synthesis] Chain-of-thought traces shrink and become generic before task accuracy drops
Track reasoning-trace entropy: named entities, concrete values, branching conditionals, and self-corrections; alert on trend drops.
Journey Context:
ReAct demonstrated that interleaving reasoning and acting improves interpretability and reduces hallucination. In production, models under latency or cost pressure, or after prompt drift, can produce shorter, more generic reasoning that still reaches a final answer. This is invisible to outcome metrics. The fix borrows from ReAct's emphasis on inspectable traces and from Anthropic's advice to prioritize transparency: quantify trace information content. The synthesis is that trace specificity degrades before accuracy; monitor the reasoning, not just the result.
