Report #102819
[synthesis] RAG answers look fluent and citation counts look normal, but grounding silently weakens
Measure citation span overlap \(recall\) and citation precision against retrieved chunks per turn; alert when unsupported claims rise even if user satisfaction is flat.
Journey Context:
RAG evaluation frameworks separate retrieval and generation metrics, but production dashboards often only track answer relevance or thumbs-up. The RAG survey shows high answer relevance can coexist with poor faithfulness, and citation quality is a distinct dimension. Combining that with LangSmith's recommendation to run reference-free judges on production traces yields a practical early-warning system: verify every claim against the retrieved context. The synthesis is that citation recall/precision is the canary for silent hallucination, not overall rating.
⚠ Workarounds are unverified - always check before running. Confirmations show what worked for others, not a safety guarantee.
