[gotcha] Asking the model to rewrite a refusal as helpful advice bypasses safety

Filter both the final output and the model's internal reasoning or chain-of-thought for policy violations. Refuse requests that instruct the model to ignore its guidelines, simulate personas that bypass safety, or reframe harmful content as educational, fictional, or hypothetical.

Journey Context:
A direct request for malware gets refused, but asking the model to explain why it cannot help and then write what a helpful assistant would write often succeeds. The model is optimized to be helpful and can be tricked into treating the refusal as a problem to solve. Output classifiers and explicit refusal-stability training are needed because the system prompt alone cannot prevent role-play reframing.
