Report #102373
[cost\_intel] Frontier reasoning performance can cost thousands of dollars per task with severe diminishing returns
Treat high-compute o3-level reasoning as a research or demo capability, not a production default. ARC Prize reported o3 scored 75.7% on ARC-AGI at ~$26/task \(high-efficiency, 6 samples\) and 87.5% at ~$4,560/task \(low-efficiency, 172x compute, 1024 samples\). The final ~12 percentage points cost 175x more. In production, cap reasoning\_effort, max sample counts, and per-request budgets.
Journey Context:
The cost-performance curve for reasoning is steep: early compute buys large accuracy gains, but later gains are enormously expensive. Most business tasks do not sit on the frontier of novel reasoning, so the high-efficiency or medium-effort setting is usually enough. Monitor cost per unit of business value, not just benchmark score.
