[cost\_intel] Reasoning models can underperform instruct models on finance and retrieval-heavy tasks despite the cost premium
Do not blindly upgrade to o1/o3 for finance Q&A, structured document extraction, or template-following tasks. On FinReason/FinQA-style evaluations, GPT-4o beat both o1-preview \(72.49% vs 49.07%\) and o3-mini \(72.49% vs 60.87%\) on FinQA, and beat o1-preview on overall average \(61.01% vs 54.05%\). Reasoning can overthink on retrieval-heavy or domain-formula tasks and add cost with no quality gain.
Journey Context:
Reasoning models are not universally better. When the answer is mostly in the context, requires strict format adherence, or depends on domain-specific formulas, the extra chain-of-thought can drift or hallucinate intermediate steps. Benchmark on your own data rather than assuming the more expensive model wins.
