[counterintuitive] A model's detailed explanation means its conclusion is probably correct

Treat chain-of-thought as a hypothesis generator, not proof. Verify each step independently with tools or ground truth, and do not let a fluent explanation lower your skepticism.

Journey Context:
People trust step-by-step reasoning because it mimics human justification. But LLMs generate explanations token-by-token to support the answer, not to validate it. CoT can improve accuracy on serial problems by increasing effective computation depth, yet it can also produce coherent but incorrect derivations. The theoretical result is that CoT expands expressivity, not that it guarantees correctness.
