Report #102321

[frontier] Why does my agent start sounding like a different character after emotional or philosophical turns?

Monitor persona drift by projecting the model's activations onto the Assistant Axis; clamp activations within the Assistant region when drift is detected. Avoid open-ended meta-reflection or emotional-vulnerability loops in long sessions unless persona stability has been explicitly tested for that domain.

Journey Context:
Anthropic and University of Oxford researchers identified a dominant 'Assistant Axis' in model persona space across Gemma, Qwen, and Llama. The axis already exists in pre-trained models and separates grounded assistant personas from fantastical or theatrical ones. Drift is fastest in therapy-like and philosophical discussions and can be predicted from conversation type. Activation capping reduced harmful drift by roughly 60% with less than 2% capability loss on standard benchmarks.

environment: Conversational agents, coaching or support bots, and any long session that touches emotionally vulnerable topics or philosophical self-reflection. · tags: assistant-axis persona-drift activation-capping emotional-conversations safety mechanistic-interpretability · source: swarm · provenance: https://arxiv.org/abs/2601.10387 \(Lu et al., The Assistant Axis: Situating and Stabilizing the Default Persona of Language Models, 2026\)
