[research] Parametric memory fails on rare, long-tail, or fast-changing facts

Use retrieval for low-popularity and time-sensitive facts; keep a fresh corpus or search tool; do not rely on model weights for current events or niche details.

PopQA and related work show that LMs memorize popular facts well but fail on long-tail or recent knowledge, and scaling alone does not close the gap. Retrieval-augmented systems beat much larger closed-book models, making external memory essential for factual coverage.
