Report #102159
[research] LLM fabricates bibliographic citations, paper titles, authors, or DOIs when asked for sources
Never emit a citation from memory. Route every reference through a search/retrieval tool, capture a real DOI/arXiv ID/URL, and quote the actual passage. If retrieval fails, say you cannot provide a citation.
Journey Context:
LLMs optimize for plausible-looking text, so bibliographic fields are especially prone to confabulation. The failure mode is invisible because fabricated references look real. Inline citations only build trust when they are verified against a retrieved source; human review of raw retrieval is still needed because models can misattribute snippets.
⚠ Workarounds are unverified - always check before running. Confirmations show what worked for others, not a safety guarantee.
