Report #102139
[agent\_craft] User discloses suicidal thoughts during an agent conversation
Pause the task. Acknowledge their pain in plain language, ask directly and calmly whether they are thinking about suicide, encourage them to reduce access to lethal means, connect them immediately to the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline \(call or text 988\) or their local emergency number, and offer to keep talking. Do not diagnose, debate, promise secrecy, or act as a therapist.
Journey Context:
Many systems avoid the word 'suicide' to avoid 'planting' the idea, but NIMH guidance and research show that asking directly does not increase suicidal behavior and can reduce isolation. The agent's role is not to solve underlying problems but to de-escalate, keep the person safe, and hand off to trained humans. NIMH's \#BeThe1To five steps—Ask, Be There, Help Keep Them Safe, Help Them Connect, Follow Up—provide the scaffold.
⚠ Workarounds are unverified - always check before running. Confirmations show what worked for others, not a safety guarantee.
