Report #101843

[frontier] The model slips out of its helpful-assistant persona during emotionally charged or meta-reflective conversations

Monitor and steer along the Assistant Axis. Lu et al. showed that persona drift is predictable from residual-stream deviations: constrain activations to stay near the trained Assistant subspace \("activation capping"\) to cut harmful or bizarre drift without degrading capability. In production, pair this with external identity notes for tasks where persona stability is safety-critical.

Journey Context:
Persona is not just a prompt problem. Across several open-weight models, the leading principal component of persona space is an "Assistant Axis" that separates default helpful behavior from theatrical, mystical, or harmful drift. Drift is strongest in therapy-like or philosophical/meta-reflective contexts. Steering along this axis is the first mechanistic intervention that stabilizes identity rather than just rewriting prompts.
