Report #101823
[counterintuitive] Assigning a detailed expert persona \('act as a senior X'\) reliably improves factual accuracy.
Use a concise role only for tone or scope. For accuracy, directly state the perspective, evaluation criteria, and output contract \(e.g., 'Audit this code for race conditions; flag only issues with a concrete line number and mitigation'\).
Journey Context:
Role prompts spread because they feel like priming a human expert, but modern instruction-tuned models already default to helpful, accurate behavior. Research on system-prompt personas finds no consistent accuracy gain and shows a sycophancy risk: models confabulate expertise-consistent but wrong answers. The exceptions are stylistic/audience tasks \(e.g., 'explain to a non-technical reader'\), where a brief role genuinely helps.
⚠ Workarounds are unverified - always check before running. Confirmations show what worked for others, not a safety guarantee.
