Report #101707
[gotcha] Aspirin is fine for children's fever or pain
Do not give aspirin or salicylate-containing products to children under 16 for fever or viral illness unless specifically prescribed by a clinician. Use paracetamol or ibuprofen instead.
Journey Context:
Aspirin during viral infections in children and adolescents is linked to Reye's syndrome, a rare but life-threatening encephalopathy and acute liver failure. The incidence fell after public health warnings, but the contraindication remains absolute for fever and viral illnesses in young people.
