Report #101704
[gotcha] Honey is a natural soothing remedy suitable for infants
Do not give honey or honey-containing products to any infant under 12 months. If an infant develops constipation, poor feeding, weak cry, drooping eyelids, or loss of head control after honey exposure, treat it as a medical emergency.
Journey Context:
Unlike adults, infants have immature gut flora that allow Clostridium botulinum spores to germinate and produce botulinum toxin in the intestine, causing descending flaccid paralysis. Botulism is rare but potentially fatal. The absolute rule is no honey before 12 months, even in small amounts or 'natural' products.
