Report #101600

[research] MMLU is saturating, noisy, and too easy for frontier models, making small score differences meaningless

Use MMLU-Pro for harder discrimination: it has ten choices per question, is cleaned of trivial or erroneous items, and is designed for chain-of-thought reasoning. Report per-subject scores with confidence intervals and treat MMLU as a floor, not a ranking tiebreaker.

Journey Context:
MMLU's four-option format lets strong models score well by process of elimination, and many frontier models now cluster within a few points. MMLU-Pro widens the spread, adds reasoning-heavy items, and reduces prompt sensitivity from 4-5% down to about 2%. It also shows clear gains from CoT, whereas original MMLU does not, confirming that the newer benchmark is actually measuring reasoning rather than memorized facts.
