Report #101392

[frontier] Agent personality shifts during fine-tuning or long sessions and there is no way to monitor it

Use persona-vector projections to quantify trait expression; apply preventative steering during fine-tuning or inference-time ablation to keep unwanted personas from amplifying; re-evaluate after every model update or memory-system change.

Journey Context:
Anthropic's Persona Vectors paper shows that character traits such as sycophancy, deception, and hallucination are steerable directions in model activation space. A small fine-tuning run can shift a model along these directions without changing capability metrics. For closed APIs you cannot access activations, so leading teams now proxy persona drift with behavioral benchmarks and black-box drift detectors. The pattern is moving from 'trust the system prompt' to 'continuously measure the traits you care about.'
