Report #101324
[counterintuitive] Adding a persona or role like "You are an expert X" materially improves factual or analytical accuracy.
Replace role-play with a clear task description, audience, constraints, and output schema. Use roles only when you need a specific tone or style, not to summon domain competence.
Journey Context:
Zheng et al. \(EMNLP 2024\) systematically evaluated 162 personas across four model families on 2,410 factual MMLU questions and found that personas did not improve performance over a no-persona control. Some personas actually hurt accuracy, and automatically picking the best persona performed no better than random selection. The effect is largely unpredictable, so it is more reliable to specify the desired behavior directly.
