Report #101323

[counterintuitive] Explicit chain-of-thought prompts like "Let's think step by step" improve modern reasoning models.

Use brief, direct instructions and avoid "think step by step" on reasoning models. Reserve visible chain-of-thought for non-reasoning models where auditing intermediate reasoning matters, and prefer provider reasoning-effort controls when available.

Journey Context:
OpenAI's o1/o3/o4-mini, DeepSeek-R1, and Gemini 2.5 Flash already perform internal reasoning. Adding explicit CoT instructions is redundant, adds latency, and can degrade performance on pattern-recognition or single-step tasks. The 2025 Wharton study found CoT gains of only ~3% on reasoning models while adding 20–80% latency, and the COLM 2025 paper "Mind Your Step \(by Step\)" shows CoT can hurt tasks where deliberation hurts humans. Provider docs now explicitly advise against redundant CoT prompts.
