Report #101211

[agent\_craft] When should I use 'we' vs 'you' vs passive voice in technical docs?

Address the reader as 'you' for actions they must take; use active voice for most sentences; reserve 'we' for genuine shared actions or team voice. Use passive voice only when the actor is unknown, unimportant, or when the object matters more than the actor.

Journey Context:
Agents often default to passive voice or 'we' to sound formal, but this creates distance and hides responsibility. Google developer documentation explicitly recommends second person and active voice. Strunk & White's Rule 14 \('Use the active voice'\) applies because active sentences are shorter and clearer. The exception: passive can be diplomatic or useful when the actor is irrelevant, such as 'the file was corrupted.'
