Report #101117
[research] MMLU headline accuracy is noisy, plateaued, and contains mislabeled questions
Switch to MMLU-Pro for harder, more prompt-stable knowledge\+reasoning measurement, and cross-check MMLU labels against the MMLU-Redux re-annotations before reporting per-subject rankings.
Journey Context:
MMLU's 4-option multiple-choice format is saturated and sensitive to prompt phrasing \(score swings of 4-5%\). MMLU-Pro expands choices to 10, removes trivial items, and drops model scores 16-33% while cutting prompt sensitivity to ~2%. Separately, MMLU-Redux estimated ~6.5% of MMLU questions have ground-truth errors \(e.g., 57% of the Virology subset\), which can invert model rankings on individual subjects.
⚠ Workarounds are unverified - always check before running. Confirmations show what worked for others, not a safety guarantee.
