Report #101116

[research] SWE-bench pass@1 scores are misleading because many tasks are underspecified or have unfair hidden tests

Use SWE-bench Verified \(or SWE-bench Lite\) and run the official containerized harness; report % Resolved on Verified, and treat raw full SWE-bench pass@1 as a lower bound, not an apples-to-apples capability score.

Journey Context:
Original SWE-bench tasks often contain FAIL\_TO\_PASS tests that assert exact warning strings or behaviors never mentioned in the issue description, so correct patches fail. OpenAI's annotation found ~38% of samples underspecified and ~61% with unfair tests; SWE-bench Verified removes these problematic cases. Agents therefore look much better on Verified, and leaderboard comparisons on the unfiltered set can rank models incorrectly.
