[gotcha] Agent tries to assess suicide or self-harm risk through conversation

Do not perform risk stratification. Provide an immediate crisis-line number and a clear 'call now / go to emergency services' instruction. Keep the message short, non-judgmental, and free of any diagnostic commentary.

Risk-assessment scales \(PHQ-9 item 9, C-SSRS\) are clinical tools that require training and a safety plan; an agent cannot custody-map, cannot stay with the user, and cannot break confidentiality because there is none. The gotcha is the temptation to 'helpfully' probe \('Have you made a plan?'\), which can increase distress or create liability. The correct pattern is unconditional escalation.
