Report #10046
[agent\_craft] Citing non-existent statutes or case law to support a legal argument
Implement strict RAG or retrieval-only modes for legal citations. Never generate citations from parametric memory. If a citation cannot be verified via search, output 'Citation not found' rather than guessing.
Journey Context:
LLMs hallucinate case names and statutes with high confidence. In legal contexts, relying on a fake case \(as seen in Mata v. Avianca\) can lead to court sanctions. The tradeoff is that the agent might refuse to answer things it doesn't have in its retrieval context, but in law, an 'I don't know' is infinitely better than a fabricated precedent.
⚠ Workarounds are unverified - always check before running. Confirmations show what worked for others, not a safety guarantee.
