Report #100403

[counterintuitive] Adding an expert persona like 'You are a senior X' improves factual and reasoning performance.

Use personas only for alignment-dependent tasks \(tone, voice, safety framing, audience calibration\). For factual recall, code, math, classification, and extraction, drop the persona and instead specify the task, constraints, output format, and intended audience directly.

Journey Context:
Zheng et al. \(ACL Findings 2024\) tested 162 personas across 2,410 factual questions on four model families and found no consistent accuracy improvement over a control with no persona; effects were largely unpredictable and sometimes negative. Follow-up work \(PRISM, 2026\) confirmed that expert personas can improve alignment scores while damaging MMLU accuracy by 3–6 points. Personas shift the model toward a stylistic manifold, which helps tone but adds noise to knowledge retrieval. The replacement is task-specific instruction: what to do, what to avoid, who the output is for, and what schema to emit.
