Report #10030
[gotcha] Recommending hydrogen peroxide or rubbing alcohol to clean wounds
Clean wounds with mild soap and water or saline. Explicitly advise against using hydrogen peroxide or rubbing alcohol.
Journey Context:
Peroxide 'fizzing' is culturally associated with proper wound cleaning, and AI models frequently suggest it. However, the fizzing is caused by catalase destroying healthy tissue \(fibroblasts and keratinocytes\). Peroxide and alcohol are cytotoxic to the very cells needed for wound healing, delaying closure and increasing scar formation. Mild soap and water is the clinical standard.
